Do You Know The 7 Period Colours That Could Signal Somethings Wrong?

Seeing a period colour that youre not used to can be disconcerting, especially if youre not used to seeing black or light pink anywhere during your cycle. As a matter of fact, theres been some widespread anxiety about the colours of our period - theres up to seven in fact - and since June 2024, internet searches have risen for the meaning of colours like pink or brown. Most of the time, theres nothing to worry about, but there are some instances, or colours, that you should keep an eye out for and should they appear, speak to a medical professional about to be sure. We asked Dr Samantha Wild at Bupa Health Clinics for the lowdown on all of the period colours you might experience, their meanings, symptoms you may experience and when to contact your GP. She tells PS UK: Your period can be a range of colours depending on the age of the blood, where you are in your cycle, and how heavy your flow is. Experts Featured in This Article Dr Samantha Wild is the clinical lead for womens health at Bupa Health Clinics. However, symptoms like pain, spotting, itching and irregular odours alongside your period might be a sign that you need treatment, so always book an appointment with a GP or health professional. To discover all seven period colours and their meanings from Dr Wild, keep reading. Bright Red Being the colour most of us associate with blood, bright red on its own is usually nothing to worry about and you may find that your period is a brighter red when you initially start bleeding. Dr Wild explains that this is because your body is working hard to shed your wombs lining. The uterus muscles contract quickly, leading to fresh, bright red blood leaving your body, she tells us. But if your period is bright red and particularly heavy and more painful than usual, you should speak to a health professional. It might be a sign that your ovaries need attention, signalling conditions like fibroids, polyps or cysts. Dark Red After the first few days of your period, you may notice the blood becomes darker and loses its brightness. According to Dr Wild, darker red signals that your womb lining shedding has slowed, and the blood thats leaving your body has been in your vagina for a little bit longer, but dont worry, this is completely normal. However, if youre seeing dark red or brown blood between your periods, it could be a sign that your body is ovulating. If this isnt normal for you its always best to get checked out by a health professional as it could also be a sign of hormone imbalances, infections, bleeding problems and cancers, Dr Wild advises. She adds: If youre pregnant and experience bleeding, always see a GP as it could be a sign of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Brown Brown period blood is another sign that whats leaving your body is on the older side. Blood turns brown when its oxidised; this means its been out of your blood vessels for longer, and has come into contact with air, Dr Wild explains. Its not usually a cause for concern if your period blood is frequently brown, either. Your womb just may take a little more time to shed, or it might even be the last bit of womb tissue leaving your system from a previous cycle. Black Black period blood might seem concerning when you first see it, but its actually another sign that the blood thats making its way through your body is older. The consistency of black blood might be slightly different too – but its not usually anything to worry about, Dr Wild says. You might find that its consistency is lumpy, like coffee grounds. This can signal that your period came later than you were expecting, and that the blood is on the acidic side. Light Pink Seeing light pink period blood just before your period starts isnt something to worry about – its your body simply signalling that your period is due imminently. But, Dr Wild suggests speaking to a GP if you notice pink discharge between your periods, though. Its especially important to seek advice from a health professional if the discharge has a watery consistency, as it may be a sign of cervical cancer, she warns. Orange Orange blood can also be an indication that your periods on its way, but if its experienced with itching, discomfort or unusual smells from your vaginal area, it could mean that youve got an infection. Speak to a health professional to see if you need any kind of treatment, Dr Wild tells us. Grey This is the only period blood colour that you should speak to a health professional about, even if its not experienced with any other symptoms. Dr Wild tells us: Grey blood can signal that youre having a miscarriage. Additionally, grey period blood might be a sign that youve got some kind of infection, for example, bacterial vaginosis.
