It is of course difficult to define what art is. One could even say that art defies definition. And yet I, and most people who engage in art as adults, are haunted by the question, What makes it art? What makes a creation special, worth preserving? In order to approach this question, I have created a list of criteria for myself that I would like to share with you, in order to initiate a discussion. My list is short and you are welcome to add your own ideas. I look forward to feedback! These are my personal criteria of what makes an image art : - There is an intuitive sense of order dictated by the intrinsic nature of the subject and/or the nature of the process. - The image gives the viewer a feeling of connection with a personal longing. - The image has a distinct visual impact. - The image appeals to the subconscious. - The image has a solid abstract composition that reveals something new and surprising about the nature of the sitter. - The picture helps to make fractures visible and to open up new perspectives. - The picture conveys an emotional poetry. - The image does not wear out, it still evokes positive emotions even after a long period of viewing.
