Activity Highlights in May 2024

Crafts, book discussions, walks through spring gardens and historic districts, a summer skin care workshop Plenty of things to do in May! GET OUT AND EXPLORE Monday, 6 May  The perfect plan for a Spring day! A late-afternoon stroll around Lietzenssee  — a hidden gem of a lake in the heart of Berlin — and then an opportunity to enjoy an evening drink and the beautiful views at Boothaus Stella. Friday, 10 May  A guided walk on Potsdam’s History Lane, with interesting information about the history of the buildings we pass. Beginning at Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, we proceed along the Freundschaftsinsel, passing the Landtag and Garnisonskirche, crossing over to the area along the Havel, the Mosque, and then over to Luisenplatz at the Brandenburg Gate in Potsdam. Tuesday, 14 May  A visit to the Women Artists Association 1867, for their exhibition of the work of Julie Wolfthorn, a prominent artist in pre-Nazi Germany. In 1942, when she was nearly eighty, Wolfthorn was deported to Auschwitz, and after her death her work was nearly forgotten. But it certainly is worth revisiting now! Thursday, 16 May  Learn about the transformation of Wannsee in the 19th century, from a fisherman’s village to a summer residence for Berliners. The walk will include a guided tour of the old church and a special tour of the clock tower. just before noon when its famous carillon starts. We will also visit the paradise garden of the church and have a look at private gardens in the neighbourhood. Friday, 17 May  A Summer Skin Care Workshop will help you get ready for an active outdoor summer by learning what is involved in good skin-care routines. Tuesday, 21 May  A stroll through the Botanical Garden to enjoy its dazzling late-spring flowering. EAT, DRINK, AND ENJOY Thursday, 9 May  Stop by for a drink after a long day, and bite to eat if you like, at our Casual Evening near Hackescher Markt. Thursday, 16 May Lunch  At Nuovo Mario Grunewald: authentic Italian cuisine in a luxurious atmosphere. The menu offers a rich selection of regional and seasonal specialties, with excellent wines from Italy and Germany. Monday, 20 May  A lunch get-together at the popular Ristorante Via Nova II in Mitte. It offers an impressive interior, with special architecture and wall design, and an extensive menu at reasonable prices. BOOKS AND FILMS Monday, 20 May  The Science Group will discuss (via Zoom) The Coming Wave by Mustafa Suleyman. This book delves into the profound impact of emerging technologies like artificial in-telligence and genetic engineering on society. (Our group coordinator used AI to create the newsletter announcement for this event!) Monday, 27 May  The Evening Book Group will discuss (via Zoom) This Other Eden by Paul Harding. The novel is a fictional re-imagining of the story of Malaga, an island off the coast of Maine that was once the home of a mixed-race fishing community until the island’s inhabitants were evicted by the state in 1912. Film Buffs, a WhatsApp group, meets on an ad hoc basis, at times convenient to participants, to go to the cinema together. STAY FIT WITH WALKING GROUPS Saturday, 11 May  A brisk hike along the Berlin-Brandenburg border towards Lichterfelde, where we will visit the viewing point of Trümmerberg Lichterfelde. Our final stop will be the Lilienthalpark, a park dedicated to the aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal, who conducted many of his test flights with gliders in this area. Every Wednesday  A walk around Schlachtensee Every Thursday  A walk around Tiergarten CRAFTS, LANGUAGES, AND GAMES Monday, 13 and 27 May  English Speakers Tuesday, 14 and 28 May  German Speakers Wednesday, 8 and 29  French Speakers The Club has multiple Mah Jong groups that play regularly, as well as a crafts group that meets at participants’ convenience. along the Berlin-Brandenburg border towards Lichterfelde, where we will visit the viewing point of Trümmerberg Lichterfelde.
