Bereits einige Jahre vorher haben die Bio-Betriebe mit der sogenannten „Bruderhahn“-Aufzucht begonnen. Und auch bei NOVUM beziehen wir seit Februar 2020 ausschließlich Bruderhahn-Eier.Können Hähne Eier legen? Nein, das können sie natürlich nicht. Um den Begriff „Bruderhahn“-Eier zu klären, muss man etwas über die Herkunft unserer Eier wissen. Als Frühstücksei, in Gebäck, in Nudeln und vielen weiteren Lebensmitteln – im Durchschnitt konsumiert jeder Bürger in Deutschland 4 bis 5 Eier pro Woche. Doch wo kommen die vielen Eier her? Der Großteil der Eier stammt von modernen Hühnerfarmen und von speziell gezüchteten Legehennen die ca. 300 Eier pro Jahr legen, dafür aber kaum Fleisch ansetzen. Es enthält reichlich Vitamine und wichtige Mineralstoffe sowie essentielle Aminosäuren und einfache ungesättigte Fettsäuren.Photo by Catherine Sheila from Pexels Auch die männlichen Küken der Legehennen-Züchtungen setzen weniger Fleisch an und eignen sich daher weder als Fleischlieferanten noch zum Eierlegen. Aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen wurden sie daher aussortiert und getötet. Die Zahl der jährlich getöteten männlichen Eintagsküken war erschreckend. Sie entsprach in etwa der Anzahl an Legehennen: über 40 Millionen. Allen voran Bio-Betriebe hatten bereits vor der Gesetzesänderung, mit der „Bruderhahn“- Aufzucht begonnen. Die männlichen Küken werden aufgezogen, gemästet und dann geschlachtet. Das dauert viermal so lange wie bei Masthähnchen und kostet ein Vielfaches. Um diese Aufwände auszugleichen, kosten die „Bruderhahn“-Eier einige Cent mehr, denn mit dem zusätzlichen Umsatz wird die Mast der Legehähnchen finanziert. Am 1. Januar 2022 trat nun das „Sechste Gesetz zur Änderung des Tierschutzes“ in Kraft, wodurch in Deutschland endlich ein flächendeckendes Verbot des Kükentötens ausgesprochen wurde.Für mehr Nachhaltigkeit und im Zeichen des TierwohlsNOVUM unterstützte die „Bruderhahn“-Idee schon seit einiger Zeit denn seit Februar 2020 beziehen wir ausschließlich Bruderhahn-Eier. Die „Bruderhahn“-Eier mit dem Siegel „Zeit zum Leben“ garantierten die Aufzucht der Hähne. Es war ein eigenständiges Siegel der „Westerwald Bio GmbH“ und gewährleistete den Schutz der männlichen Küken nach der Geburt. Die Eier kosteten damals wie heute nur wenige Cent mehr, dafür wurde auch den Hähnen nach dem Schlüpfen „Zeit zum Leben“ gegeben und sie wurden wie die Legehennen separat in einem Stall aufgezogen.
